In any given photoshoot, there are an infinite number of decisions. Any combination of setting, lighting, or technology can make or ruin a great image. It’s an ongoing pursuit for any fine arts photographer to make the best decisions so they can capture that elusive perfect image. Even if perfection is unattainable, we strive to get close.
The infinity of wrong decisions far exceeds the infinity of right decisions. How is that possible? Different infinities were first discovered by the German mathematician Georg Ferdinand Ludwig Philipp Cantor between 1874 and 1884. Cantor was the creator of the Set Theory, proving that real numbers are “more numerous” than natural numbers. Set theory is a branch of mathematical logic that studies collections of objects. I apply these theories to photography.
Beautiful photographs are like mathematical prime numbers – they’re rare, but an infinite number of them still exist in any given scene. The challenge is finding those prime numbers. Even if I feel I’ve succeeded, I realize that ten photographers would find ten different prime numbers in the same instance. So I’m constantly asking myself, “Which prime numbers would a great photographer find at this moment?”
That’s the beauty of photography. Every photographer’s prime number is a reflection of their creativity. Each prime number is beautiful.
