“Are you an entrepreneur, manager, or specialist? Pick one.”

I had never been asked such a question, and I was immediately engaged. I thought about it for a moment.

  • Entrepreneurs want to start new ventures. They take risks and love the thrill of building something from nothing.
  • Specialists have specific skills that make them unique and valuable. These capabilities differentiate them from the competition.
  • Managers want to orchestrate, lead, and collaborate.

All three roles are needed to build a successful enterprise. Entrepreneurs are typically company founders who then hire managers to run their ventures. They prefer to leave their companies for others to manage so that they can start a new venture. Managers direct specialists to achieve specific goals. The interface with entrepreneurs on strategic direction and specialists on tactics objectives. Specialists work on honing and expanding their skills.

Problems can arise when, for example, specialists are promoted to management. This may seem logical as an evolution of their career path. As their value increases in a company, they’re given more responsibility and a higher salary. But such promotions may detract from their passion. Their shift in focus to managing people may be detrimental if they’re not interested in changing from a specialist to a manager.
