Falling in love is like jumping into a river. As the water washes over our hearts, we feel exhilarated. Then, we suddenly realize that we’re being pulled downstream. As the current gets stronger, we increasingly feel out of control. Suddenly, we’re approaching a waterfall. Swimming against the current is futile. As we’re pulled towards the precipice, we hope to survive and emerge unscathed.
When I was a teenager, I remember being asked, “How do you know you’re in love?” At first, I was offended, as if to say, “How dare you question my feelings!” With a bit of introspection, I answered from my heart. It’s not a trick question, and there are no textbook answers.
Falling in love is like jumping into a river. It’s exhilarating, and then you suddenly realize you’re being pulled downstream.
In hindsight, I can reflect on this question with empathy and wisdom. This may seem a bit unfair to my other relationships, but I’ve come to realize having only one true love. Only one woman has imprinted herself into my bones, even though we’re no longer together. To me, this is what it means to love. Through anger, agony, and disappointment, she is forever embedded in my soul.
Only in hindsight can we determine if our waterfall was lust or love. I’m grateful to have truly experienced deep love at least once in my lifetime. If someone asks you, “How do you know you’re in love?” then don’t be offended. Let your heart answer, and don’t be afraid to jump into the river.
