Our interactions in society play out in three main roles:
- Wife • Woman • Mother
- Husband • Man • Father
- Partner • Person • Parent
The persona of Woman • Man • Person are interactions with friends, colleagues at work, and the rest of society. As a Wife • Husband • Partner, our behavior is a reflection of how our significant other sees us. As a Mother • Father • Parent, we’re viewed from the vantage point of our children. What we most value in life decides where we choose to focus. We can only be graded by those around us. Any subjective assessment is inconsequential.
Someone who longs to have children will focus on their role as a Mother • Father • Parent. Those who dedicate their lives to a career or building fame, power, and wealth will focus on their role as a Woman • Man • Person.
Most can be good at one role. Being exemplary at two is a great achievement. Very few among us have the fortitude to be good at all three roles. Succeeding in all three is extremely rare. Regardless, being self-reflective allows us to improve on the roles where we’re underperforming.
Wife • Woman • Mother
Husband • Man • Father
Partner • Person • Parent
There are personality types for which none of these roles are achievable. Those who are cursed with Narcissist Personality Disorder (i.e., NPD) have little care for anyone but themselves. Toxicity plays into all three roles. Evil-doers may have failed at being a good Woman • Man • Person, but they can love their children or partner. Atonement can come later in life. Introspection offers a chance to take a new path of redemption in any or all three roles.
