In the dawn of the Internet, people didn’t initially recognize its benefit. Content was in its infancy, and applications didn’t appeal to the masses. It took a decade for the chicken and egg dilemma to play out. Emerging technology often defines a new generation gap. The young latch on, and the old see it as a waste of time. Progress has a way of polarizing society.
New inventions sometimes need an analogy to understand their context. The Internet, for example, is just a metaphor for the public library. The US Library of Congress has over 50 million cataloged books. It could be argued that any one individual is interested in no more than 50,000 in their lifetime – our 0.1%. The rest we treat as a waste of space. But we value the concept of a library for its resources. Everyone’s 0.1% is as unique as our DNA. Three decades into the Internet’s evolution, we continue to explore only our 0.1%.
Where do we find the 0.1% of applications, books, music, movies, or videos that will appease our interest?
We’re now faced with an Artificial Intelligence revolution. Dystopian fears emerge where sentient computers will end the world as we know it. Victims will be exposed to AI scams as the filth of humanity finds new ways to exploit technology for financial gain. Once the dust settles, all that matters will be our 0.1%.
