When my children were born, I was faced with the grand challenge of raising them. My dilemma was in realizing that I was in a virtual box and that the default of most parents is to raise their children in the same box. I saw this as a weakness in my parenting abilities, so I set out not to inflict such limitations on my children. Our parenting box walls are represented by Economics, Society, Intelligence, Politics, Technology, Insecurity, and Empathy. We tend to indoctrinate our kids with our image. We tend to educate them in the same economic and social bracket where we were raised. But our personalities can get in the way. Our Insecurities create a glass ceiling to their development. If we lack compassion, then we won’t have the capacity to teach our children the universal value of empathy.
We tend to indoctrinate our kids with our image. But our personalities can get in the way.
Indoctrination, brainwashing, and manipulation are all variations of the same theme. And they typically have a negative connotation. As a glass-half-full parent, I rationalize that parental “brainwashing” is a positive form of manipulation. I’ve subjectively classified myself as a ‘good person,’ and I want my children to grow up to be good people.
Brainwashing wholesome values into our children can’t necessarily be a bad thing, right? Within our virtual box, we justify parental indoctrination as acceptable because it worked for us. But our box inevitably restricts our children from growing to their full potential. They can’t be better than us if they’re imprisoned in their parents’ box. We need the confidence to allow our offspring to break barriers so that they can exceed our capabilities and reach their full potential.
It’s incredibly challenging to think outside our parenting box. Even if I think I’m succeeding, it’s likely an illusion. But there are occasions when I feel I’ve succeeded. For example, when my children were teenagers, I noticed a period of transition when they would correct me and proceed to teach me something I didn’t know. These beautiful moments light up my day – witnessing a student become a teacher. All it takes is confidence to listen and learn and always remain a student.
