When my kids were born, I was conscious that generation gap issues would eventually surface. When I was young I heard comments like, “Rock music is bad for you! Long hair makes you look uneducated! You look homeless with those ripped jeans! Don’t expect to get an office job if you get a tattoo!” The world has evolved, and many things that our parents believed are now outdated. What was initially shocking eventually becomes embedded into society.
I always tried to make a concerted effort to acknowledge my kid’s interests even if I didn’t share them. It’s less about what I believed and more about how inclusive I wanted to be in their lives. When they enthusiastically told me about a new video game I listened intently. I could have bluntly responded that I have no interest in playing video games, but I knew it meant burning that bridge. They would never talk to me about that topic again. Parents have no idea how many doors they’ve closed throughout their child’s adolescence. A day eventually comes when they’re baffled as to why their children don’t talk to them. When all common ground is systematically rejected then there’s nothing left to discuss.
A few years ago a business colleague and I were brainstorming about business opportunities around mobile apps. He blurted, “That Snapchat app is stupid! What’s the point of a photo lasting only 10 seconds!” I responded, “Just because you don’t understand the purpose of the app, doesn’t make it worthless. It’s worthless to you because you’re far from their demographic”. Part of understanding the generation gap is recognizing when you’re completely disconnected from a target audience. A classic mistake is to assume a divine position of knowing every market landscape. Having an opinion doesn’t make you even remotely right. In 2013 Facebook offered to acquire Snapchat for 3 billion US$, and they declined.
Through a child’s adolescence, parents have no idea how many doors they’ve closed.
A day eventually comes when they can’t figure out why their children no longer talk to them.
But the generation gap works both ways. Throughout puberty, teenagers come to an epiphany that adults are stupid. They’re proud to hold this knowledge, as if it’s a secret only they discovered. It’s not until they go out into the real world and realizing they’re just an ant in a big world, and they’ve done little to prove themselves. All of a sudden they even matching their parent’s success is a tall order. Young adults have a reciprocal responsibility to build bridges and establish common ground with their wiser and more experienced generations. By asking questions they may learn a thing or two.
The generation gap is strongly linked to the “Grumpy-Old-Man, Grumpy-Old-Woman, Grumpy-Old-Person” syndrome (i.e., It’s equal opportunity when it comes to grumpiness). Xenophobic rants, LGBTQ2+ disdain, or contempt towards religious groups of whom they know nothing. This is partially fueled by external forces mandated to incite anger, hatred, and a fear of the unknown. I never want to be “that” guy. A glass-half-empty lifestyle doesn’t help me raise my offspring to be empathic human beings. In the meantime, I’ll continue to listen and talk to my kids – in that order.

Dusil Photography captures exquisite moments with models who dare to be vulnerable and enter the world of sensuality. I’ve been blessed with the freedom to explore their deepest emotions. Whether it’s alluring curves or a seductive gaze, each photograph tells her story. My portfolio reflects a seamless fusion of feminine beauty and compassion.
