We live and breathe in a reality that our brains allow us to perceive. Our interaction with the universe has evolved into five basic senses (i.e., sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch), although more have been identified in recent decades. Can we compartmentalize other realities or alternate existences?
Dreaming could be considered yet another reality. Our brains rationalize our daily experiences while we’re sleeping, even if they seem convoluted. It’s an alternative state of being within the confines of our minds.
The invention of software is also a self-contained reality. The invention of computers created an alternative existence that transformed the physical world into a virtual one. We’ve recently theorized that even our own existence could be a computer simulation. Virtual Reality has the potential to evolve humans to higher orders of magnitude. Where human consciousness could be transferred to cloud storage. A dream-state existence where we’re not constrained by the laws of physics. A world where sentience can be created using technology. We will shortly have the technological foundations to create self-aware entities from nothing.
Software and dreaming are effectively sub-realities to our own. What about realities beyond human consciousness? Some religions believe in life after death. Other religions believe there is an existence before we’re even born. In essence, these are interpretations of our reality from a circular existence – the beginning is also the end – to a linear one, where we continue to exist from the beginning of time and beyond. The greatest fear in the world is the fear of death. Did we manifest these alternative existences because we refuse to believe that our existence will cease one day?
Any attempt to conceptualize Reantity is fruitless.
But it’s still fun to try.
Consider a thought experiment where we need to explain a computer to an ant. The notion is absurd because as far as we know, ants can’t understand our existence. They may see us as ignorant giants walking over them, or maybe as gods. Explaining anything to an ant is ludicrous. Aside from the fact that we don’t have a common language, we assume their brains are too small to understand our universe.
But what if we’re in a reality where we’re the ants? Where a higher entity knows that we’re incapable of understanding their existence because of limitations of the human brain. How would they “see” us? What does their existence look like? Are they our gods? Any attempt to even communicate would be ludicrous because we’re their ants. This is what I call, “Reantity”.
Humans are arrogant in the belief that our brains can fully comprehend the universe. We even theorize the absolute origins of its creation – The Big Bang. We’ve evolved our understanding of the universe through paganism, religion, and science. But the extent of everything we rationalize is still restricted to the confines of our cognitive capacities. Any existential understanding of our universe is justified within the confines of the human brain. God? The Universe? Time? The Multiverse? These only exist in the context of what we are capable of comprehending – in a brain that weighs just 1.4kg. The ants under our feet are also comprehending their universe within the confines of their 3.26 mg brains. Therefore, it’s a logical extrapolation to conclude that the size of our human brains constricts our understanding of the universe.
Trying to extrapolate beyond what we can comprehend is still a thought experiment trapped within our reality box. An ant will never not be an ant. A human will never not be a human. An ant will never wonder how a computer works. Therefore, my attempt to theorize Reantity doesn’t give me the key to escape my box. I’m still only human.
