I was lucky to grow up surrounded by the love of my family. When I was very young my mother told me, “Gabičko, do you know how lucky you are to have parents who love you?”
At the time, this question seemed incomprehensible. How could I not be loved by my parents? It took a bit of growing up to realize that “love” did not encircle other families in the same I experienced it.
My family is very cuddly. When I was told I was loved, I felt it. I knew it. We hugged a lot. This physical expression of emotions became a staple of my youth. I also realized that our physicality wasn’t common among friends. It was somewhat tolerated but many would wince at the emotional embrace, saying, “I guess that’s how you Europeans are. We’re not like that over here.”
When your children are sad, hug them and tell them how much you love them. When they’re happy, kiss them and remind them how special they are.
I realized that physical affection was dramatically different outside of my household and I needed to make a concerted effort to avoid physical contact with some people.
To the rest of you: When your children are sad, hug them and tell them how much you love them. When they’re happy, kiss them and remind them how special they are. For all others in-between: don’t forget to tell your children how much you love them. 💌
