Throughout elementary school, I walked every day to my parent’s animal hospital after school and hung around until we closed. During those years I learned compassion through animal care. I witnessed birth and death – joy and sorrow. For many years clients would ask me if I wanted to be a vet. My automatic reply was to say, “Yes”. Then one day when I was eleven, my mom said, “Gabičko, I want you to know that you don’t have to be a vet just because your dad and I are vets. You can do whatever you want. Don’t feel that you need to follow in our footsteps.”
If You Love What You Do, You’ll Never Work a Day In Your Life.
That profound statement was a pivotal moment in my life. From that point onward I decided to pursue my own career path. But I still grappled with what to do throughout high school. The options I gave myself were either pursuing photography or engineering. After speaking to a newspaper photographer at a school event I came to the conclusion that photography would be a financial struggle. I also didn’t feel that I had the creative talent to be successful in photography. Engineering was a safer bet and I rationalized that I could still enjoy photography as a hobby.
After getting a degree in engineering physics, I realized pursuing that path required a Ph.D. I wasn’t willing to go down that path. I was done with school. I even decided to not pursue a career in engineering altogether. I had other plans.
I moved to Prague in 1993 to see if I could find my path in the post-communist Czech Republic. I gave myself five years. If it didn’t work out then I’d come back home. My education eventually opened opportunities in Information Technology, Internet Security, and Video Streaming Services. And a journey that took me from Prague to London, and back. My creative side was still dormant but it guided me towards marketing, and I soon realized that I had a talent for translating incredibly abstract technological concepts into a language that everyone could understand. I was able to combine the science of technology with the artistry of marketing. Thirty years later I’m still in Prague and having a great time!
These days I’ve come full circle with fine arts photography. I can explore my creative ambitions, while fully utilizing my technical skills in web development, creative writing, motion graphics, and graphics design. Once again I find myself combining science and art. But this time it’s the physics of lighting, optics, and motion with the artistry of photography.
I’m grateful to have parents who loved me. They brought me up to follow my passion. To love what I do. Besides a few distractions along the way, I have managed to achieve my career goals as well as the financial freedom to explore my hobbies. Every day my soul is filled with doing what I love.
